The Inland Valley Hope Partners began the Walk for the Hungry in 1973. At that time it was called the Crop Walk, where most of the funds raised by the walkers went to global hunger (75%) and the balance supporting local hunger issues (25%).
Since then the Walk has evolved into an annual event, most often held in October, where walkers raise money for local hungry residents (80%), while still supporting the global hunger issues (20%).
Coordinators from local faith communities, service clubs and businesses put teams together who meet at the start/finish line on a Sunday afternoon in October to walk 5K or 10K, not just to raise funds, but also to raise awareness of the issues affecting the poor. In addition, businesses, individuals and service clubs provide event sponsorships, either by providing product, such as water for the walkers, or cash to pay for event expenses.
The wonderful family event includes music, free face painting, balloons, festival games, as well as In-N-Out Burgers. Several churches along the route supply water stops, for both the walkers and their canine companions.
